West and North to Daporijo
Was pleasantly surprised this morning at 0500 when Divya called me saying what was the delay. I was supposed to knock on her door at 0500.
Slight drizzle when we started out. The mist was in. The road was wet. The clouds hanging over the mountains looked absolutely beautiful.
The green cover on the mountains was awesome. Traffic was minimal along the road. Our average speed for the first two hours was not more than 15kmph. State of road.
But, the beauty of the surroundings never allowed us an ounce of complaint.
We had planned to have breakfast around 0730. So started looking out for roadside eateries. There were only two dishes available at the very few eating sports we found. One was country chicken and rice, the other was broiler chicken and rice. Decided that as a bad joke. Moved on to our emergency breakfast of energy bars.
There is a lot of road development work going on in this stretch. We passed a sign that restricted traffic past a certain point from 0900 to 1700. Lucky for us we passed early. The development work means we hit road closures from time to time. Nothing that kept us for long. In fact, it gave us the chance to get out, stretch our legs and get a few pictures done.
Got our first serious look at the River Subansiri some time later.
Was using Apple maps for this run, as only Airtel had connect. Well, it too had it's plans for me as we neared Daporijo after an 8 hour run, at an average of 20 kmph. It wanted us to turn onto a road that led to a bridge across the River Subansiri. Only problem was that the bridge was a hanging bridge meant for human beings on their two feet. As we went past the turn off, poor thing started screaming at us to turn around and get back on the road marked for us. Ignored it. Got to a Bailey Bridge a few kilometers ahead.
Got into the hotel checked in and had a hot lunch. Well earned.
Then went to see the bridge the map had wanted us to use to cross the River Subansiri. Leave you with that.
