Diskit - Nubra - Siachen Base Camp
Post for 7th October, started on 14th October
The road to the Base Camp runs along the River Nubra, below the Ladakh range of mountains.
The Riber Nubra originates at the Siachen glacier.
Left as usual after filling my stomach. Very necessary, both for the weather and for the chance that there may not be much available on the road.
There were three of these, presumably to supply that village.
The road was not too bad. No traffic, was absolutely at ease.
That is the first peep at the glacier, if you can see it.
The entrance is unassuming. Till you understand the geography of the location.
If you were standing with your back to the sign board, the Siachen Glacier is behind you.
The pakis ( Thang ) are to your right.
The chinks ( Galwan ) is to your left.
This is a pimple just where it should be. An irritant to the enemy. Totally ready and prepared.
The Siachen War Memorial.
A majority of those who died were before 2004. They died because of the weather.
Bringing in equipment to serve the terrain saved so many more.
The names of each of the brave is carved in stone.
There is a feeling of anger at the absolute incompetence of the establishment that wanted these me guarding borders without having a clue as to what it took.
And, there was a feeling of pride that the men did it. FUCK the establishment.
