Diskit - Nubra - Thang
Post for 6th October, started 14th October
The destination for the day was a village called Thyasi, which was past Turtuk.
Was told to go as far as I could, as the Line of Control was at a village called Thang.
The entire Turtuk region was retaken by our Army in 1971.
Started after a decent breakfast, driving up the River Shyok.
As you can see the drive was a nice, gentle run.
Came up to the Shyok War Memorial.
Spent some time there. Picked up a couple of tshirts and a can of apricot.
Not much later, came across this. Talks of the braves who captured the region in the face of some serious weather.
Met a few Army men who were heading out on an exercise. Spent sometime having a chat.
Drove into Turtuk. Was delighted to see lots of eating places. Lunch site decided.
Then as you can see passed into Tyakshi.
Came up on a Army check post. You go straight and that is where the army looks down on the enemy. Tourists are turned right to the village Thang, which is a bit further away from direct enemy action.
The road went to pieces. It was not too far, so had no time for pictures of the short drive.
If you can see the river, that is the LOC.
That is the paki village
And that, to the left of the white looking rock is a paki bunker.
Stopped at this place next to the river for lunch. Choice was noodles or noodles. Decided on the first. Too much for me. So gave half back to the cook.
Got back to Diskit by 1530 for a relaxed evening.
Great journey.....enjoying your blogs.
